Farbfelder

Interactive light installation

For the Weimarer Kunstfest Pelerinage 2004 (art festival) students were supposed to develop an intergrated space concept, that includes areas for selling tickets, cafeteria and art exhibition.

During the day the ways of using the room are changed by the visitors. Each way of usage should correspond with an appropriate light situation. Unfortunately, most light situations are not appreciated or even noticed by owners, who care for the business and customers only in most cases.

Farbfelder (colour fields) is a system of light, which controls the light management automatically by recognizing the three kinds of usage. The room wass watched by a camera that checked the visitors activity.

A second version used microcontrollers and movement sensors instead of camera and computer.

Frequent activity around the ticket counter resulted from counselling and selling was supported by bright and matter-of-fact light. In the late afternoon the use of the room slightly changed to people wanting to enjoy the exhibition. The light-system Farbfelder recognizes the change and adjusts the light situation softly to a more scenic light.

The light design was based on Goethe's theory of colours and his idea of harmony of colours. Each area corresponded to a colour, which influenced the general colour tone of the room. Movement by the visitors in one of these fields changed the light colour.

According to Goethe's Theory Of Colours the basic tone went with its contrast colour, which avoids frequent repetitions of the light situation.
